Where Design Meets Coffee Culture, Arabica Ho Chi Minh City

Ah, the smell of freshly ground coffee! Few things can capture a city’s atmosphere as vividly as stepping into a café where design, craftsmanship and flavor come together. In Ho Chi Minh City, I found my perfect spot the Arabica Roastery. Tucked in the heart of the city, surrounded by historic landmarks and the energy of everyday life, this café became my oasis in the heat of the Vietnamese sun. With an iced matcha in hand, I discovered not only refreshment but also one of the most inspiring spaces of my visit.

A Japanese coffee brand with a global soul

% Arabica is a brand that has always fascinated me. The brand is founded in Kyoto, Japan by Kenneth Shoji. The brand was born out of his passion for high-quality coffee and beautifully designed spaces. The vision was simple yet ambitious: to create a place where coffee culture and design seamlessly merge, offering more than just a drink but a lifestyle experience.

From its beginnings in Japan, % Arabica has grown into a global phenomenon, with cafés across Asia, Europe and beyond. Each location reflects the brand’s design ethos, minimalism and functionality. In Ho Chi Minh City, this philosophy comes alive in a way that perfectly balances the vibrancy of Vietnam with the brand’s Japanese design.

A modern sanctuary in the city

The location of this roastery couldn’t be more ideal. Right in the center of Ho Chi Minh City, amidst colonial-era buildings, historic sights, and busy streets, Arabica offers a sanctuary for coffee lovers and design enthusiasts. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the lightness and openness of this space.

Large glass walls framed both the city and the lush greenery outside, allowing natural light to flood the interior. This transparency blurred the line between indoor and outdoor, making the café feel airy and connected to its surroundings. This architectural decision is filtering the strong tropical sunlight into a soft, glowing light and creating also deeply experiential visit, as it invited the city into the café while maintaining a sense of calm inside.

A celebration of craftsmanship

What truly set this cafe apart was the coffee roaster placed prominently at the heart of this space. Unlike many cafes where the roasting process is hidden away, here it was proudly displayed, becoming the focal point of the interior.

The aroma of freshly roasted beans filled the air, creating an atmosphere that was both energizing and comforting. Watching the staff work with precision, monitoring roast levels, adjusting temperatures, and pouring their full attention into each batch was so mesmerizing. The roasting process itself became a performance, and we the visitors were invited to witness the artistry behind every set.

This detail captures the essence of Arabica´s transparency, craftsmanship and the celebration of process. It transformed my visit from a simple coffee break into an experience that engaged all senses.

Interior design, industrial minimalism with a warm twist

At its core, the interior embraced a modern industrial style, with exposed structures, clean lines and raw finishes. Yet it was softened by light tones, generous use of glass, and thoughtful spatial planning.

The neutral color palette dominated by whites and soft beiges, just like in the brand´s other cafes are creating a calming backdrop that allowed the products and the roasting process to take center stage. This restraint in color emphasized the brand’s minimal aesthetic while also making the café feel timeless and sophisticated.

The glass walls were perhaps my favorite feature. They framed the bustling city outside while introducing lush greenery from the palm trees and plantings nearby. This dialogue between urban vibrancy and natural softness gave the space an incredible balance. Sitting inside, you could feel the energy of Ho Chi Minh City while also enjoying a serene moment of stillness.
